Two-day Workshop

 

The first event for each Leadership cohort is a two-day summer leadership training workshop. All the Leadership Fellows meet and learn from experienced leaders through panels, presentations, and small group discussions on topics that will expand their vision of what leadership means, teach them essential leadership skills, and increase their motivation to make a difference as a leader.   

Past workshop sessions have included

  • Panels:

    • What does it take to be a leader in higher education? 

    • Expanding your horizon - leadership roles besides being a dept chair or dean

  • Presentations:

    • Different leadership styles 

    • Communication and people skills

    • What does it take to become a leader outside of academia?

    • Experiences and lessons learned: a journey from department chair to president and chancellor of a university

  • Small Group Breakout Sessions:

    • Managing Conflict Scenarios

    • Refining Your Leadership Project

  • Self-assessment: reflection journal writing on Your future role as a leader

Sample Discussion Topics for the Bi-monthly Group Virtual Meeting 

  1. Managing a department or a program (e.g., who to go to for data and additional resources, how to make an effective case for additional resources, budgets, etc.)

  2. The changing role of mathematics and meeting people in other disciplines who are using mathematics in new and unusual ways.

  3. Managing conflict

  4. Organizing a department or program (e.g., team building/consensus building, how to lay out the organization or structure of a department or program, etc.)

  5. Evaluating the needs of a department or program and creating a strategic plan
