We all want to support math majors and make sure graduates are ready to succeed. A new report from Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE) details the best practices to achieve that goal, especially for students seeking careers in industry.
TPSE commissioned the Rutgers Education and Employment Research Center to research and compile Preparing Math Majors for Careers featuring insights and recommendations on a wide range of topics related to policy, curriculum, advising, and professional development. Consisting of an executive summary and six briefs that focus on specific areas, the report highlights promising career-readiness practices from math departments across the country. Below are the final reports authored by Heather McKay, Suzanne Michael and Renee Edwards:
- Executive Summary
- Policies and Practices for Career Readiness
- Revising Curriculum
- Advising Strategies and Practices
- Professional Development for Faculty and Staff
- Working with Alumni
- Partnering with Industry
On October 29, 2020 a webinar was held to learn about the findings and interact directly with the authors. Additionally, a series of “implementation workshops” are being scheduled from November 2020 to March 2021. These online workshops are for institutional teams interested in implementing the strategies detailed in the report, with each session concentrating on one of the focus areas. Below are the presentation slides and webinar recording.
